Greenwood Orchid
Simplex Multi-Apartment · Basundhora R/A, Dhaka · 2018
Greenwood Orchid occupies a 6-katha plot in Basundhora R/A, its composition organised around a clear tectonic distinction between two vertical elements. Two tall brick piers rise at the outer edges of the facade, their warm terracotta tone and textured coursing framing the building's width and anchoring it visually to the ground. Between them, the central portion of the elevation is resolved in pale stone-tiled cladding panels, their lighter tone and finer surface creating a deliberate contrast with the solidity of the brick on either side. The building reads as a frame holding a field, the brick piers structural and expressive, the central panel light and recessive.
Each floor is marked by a projecting balcony with horizontal louvre railings, their repetition building a consistent horizontal rhythm across the central facade and providing each apartment with a generous outdoor threshold. The louvre angle is calibrated to allow air movement while softening the view in from the street, maintaining privacy without enclosure.
Planted greenery at the rooftop and at the upper terrace levels spills over the parapet, the cascading foliage visible from below against the pale cladding and introducing a softness to the building's upper register that the precise stone and brick below does not provide.
At ground level, a canopied entry is set back from the street boundary, its double-height volume and carefully detailed forecourt giving the arrival sequence a weight appropriate to the residential building above.
