GUSTA Coffee
Commercial Complex · Jolshiri Abashon, Sector 11, Narayangonj · 2023
GUSTA Coffee condenses three distinct commercial programmes, a coffee shop, a super shop, and rentable commercial floors, into a 2.2-katha plot in Jolshiri Sector 11. The design problem is one of identity as much as organisation: how does a small mixed-use building assert a legible presence on a street where scale and attention are in competition, without dissolving into signage and surface noise?
The answer is found in the counterpoint between two materials and two architectural logics. A fully glazed curtain wall wraps the primary street faces, exposing the interior life of each floor to the city and dissolving the boundary between the commercial activity within and the public realm without. Against this transparency, a bold red cladding spine runs vertically up the facade, carrying the brand identity of GUSTA with structural conviction. This is not a sign attached to a building. It is a building that has absorbed its identity into its tectonic language, the colour and the cladding functioning as a single compositional element rather than applied decoration.
The top floor breaks from the enclosed floors below, opening into a greenhouse-like volume of steel and glass, its pitched roof reading from the street as a lantern set against the sky. This uppermost space, generous in its glazing and light, signals a different register of occupation above the commercial activity of the floors below.
At 550 sqm across its full section, the project demonstrates that a tight urban site and a complex programme are not obstacles to architectural ambition, but the conditions under which it is most precisely tested.
