Hena Jewellers
Jewellery Showroom · Bashundhara City, Dhaka

Jewellery retail demands a particular quality of attention from its interior. The objects on display are small, precious, and easily overwhelmed by their setting. The room must create an atmosphere of occasion without competing with the merchandise it holds. At Hena Jewellers in Bashundhara City, 23/90 Architects resolved this challenge through a counterpoint of two materials at opposite ends of the tectonic spectrum: rough volcanic-textured stone and warm-grained timber, darkness and light held in precise tension.

The back wall is the spatial anchor of the entire showroom. A surface of deeply textured dark stone, its face irregular and raw as though drawn from the earth rather than manufactured, spans the full width of the space. Against this primal ground, the Hena Jewellers mark is positioned centrally, the brand identity given weight by the geological force of the material behind it. This wall does not recede; it holds the room in place and gives the jewellery displayed before it the character of objects recovered from the earth and offered for contemplation.

Against this darkness, the display and counter system is built entirely in warm honey-toned timber veneer. The counter runs in a generous U-shaped arrangement, its curved front face expressing the material plainly, its glass top surface allowing the merchandise within to catch the carefully positioned downlights above. On either side of the back wall, vertical LED light strips frame the display columns, their cold white light forming a luminous border that separates the dark stone zone from the warmth of the timber on either flank.

The ceiling continues the project's material logic. Horizontal timber slats run the full length of the showroom, interrupted at intervals by recessed rectangular LED panels that throw even, warm light downward across the display surfaces below. The effect is of a space that is simultaneously intimate and well-lit, a combination that jewellery retail demands but rarely achieves.

Hena Jewellers is a showroom that understands the relationship between setting and object. The drama is in the room; the jewellery, by contrast, appears quietly inevitable.
