Residence at Netrokona
Private Family Residence · Bagpara, Netrokona, Bangladesh · 2024
There is a particular kind of home that is designed not just for daily life, but for the possibility of reunion — where the architecture anticipates the irregular rhythms of a family spread across cities, returning to a single place. The Residence at Netrokona is precisely that: a permanent home for aging parents that transforms, on certain days, into a gathering place for their children and grandchildren, a house calibrated equally for the quiet of ordinary mornings and the fullness of holiday celebrations.
The site in Bagpara sits within Netrokona's gentler, greener edge — and the architects have drawn deeply from this landscape. The building settles low into its surroundings, its white planar volumes dissolving into mature trees and planted edges rather than asserting themselves against them. From the exterior, the residence reads as a series of horizontal layers — receding terraces, overhanging rooflines, and deep-shadowed openings — bound together by lush subtropical vegetation that wraps every surface and softens every corner.
At the heart of the spatial strategy is water. A body of water introduced along the eastern edge of the site performs a dual role that is both climatic and architectural. As the prevailing warm air moves in from the east, it passes over the water surface, cooling before it enters the house. Simultaneously, the water body establishes a spatial boundary between the public and private zones of the house: the formal living area opens toward it across glass, while the bedrooms are held back. A double-height dining space anchors this threshold, framing the water as a living picture and functioning as the primary gathering heart of the house.
The upper level resolves the tension between togetherness and retreat. Individual bedrooms are connected by an internal bridge, a gesture that acknowledges the independence of each family member arriving for a visit while keeping them physically linked. When the house fills on holidays, the south-facing terrace and rooftop open up as extended living surfaces. The Residence at Netrokona is, ultimately, a house built around a single understanding: that the finest homes are not designed for one kind of living, but for all the ways a family changes over time.
